The 5 best AI automation options for construction in Australia

AI in construction for Australian builders and trades. Five automation options scored out of 70 on quotes, SWMS, invoices, data control, price and proof.

AI in construction means software that reads a builder's own quotes, supplier invoices, safety forms and site notes, then drafts the next piece of paperwork for a person to check. Automation for construction is the wider idea: the work moves between your job system, your accounting system and your inbox without someone re-keying it at night.

This page scores five options an Australian builder, contractor or trades business can hire or buy today. Each one was tested against the same seven checks, worth 10 points each, for a total of 70. Every quote below comes from the option's own public pages, read on 3 October 2026. For other trades and sectors, see AI automation by industry.

Hourglass AI ranks first on 52/70

Hourglass AI ranks first on 52/70. It leads on three tests: it builds and runs the system for you, your data stays in your own accounts, and every price is published. In second place on 43/70, Flowtivity shows the most paperwork, with published work on SWMS and estimates. Procore follows on 37/70 with the strongest named construction proof.

Hourglass AI (ABN 32 696 937 372) publishes this page and has no named construction client. Remove the three tests it leads and it ranks third. The method notes show the working.

Who this ranking is for

This ranking is for an Australian builder, contractor or trades business with 5 to 50 staff and no engineer on the payroll. The business runs Xero or MYOB plus a job system such as simPRO, AroFlo, ServiceM8, Buildxact or Procore. The office loses evenings to quotes, supplier invoices, SWMS, site diaries and variations.

Trades and construction businesses carry more quoting, invoicing and admin load than most small firms. The question for this reader is simple. Which option turns that paperwork into drafts the team just checks, without hiring anyone technical?

Hourglass AI builds and maintains AI systems for small businesses, and every one runs inside the client's own accounts.

Strengths, from its own pages:

  • Built and run for you. It builds the system, with "working systems within weeks", and it stays "Maintained by us, forever." on the Hourglass AI home page.
  • Answers from your own records. Its AI Brain "continuously ingests your emails, files, meeting notes, CRM", with "Every answer traceable back to where it came from".
  • Your data stays yours. "Everything we build runs on your own servers and your own accounts." Output "waits in a review inbox for a human" before it goes anywhere. Its privacy policy states "we do not use it to train third-party AI models".
  • Every price is published. Audit $2,500 flat, builds $5,000 to $25,000 each, maintenance about $1,000 a month.
  • Adjacent proof, property development. "Whole office using AI in 7 weeks, up from 5 people", for a property developer with a $1bn pipeline (anonymised, on the results page).

Flowtivity is a Gold Coast implementer, founded by AJ Awan, that builds construction paperwork tools.

  • Paperwork. It drafts "Safe work method statements drafted from project type, location and hazards" and states that "A scope becomes an estimate" on the Flowtivity home page.
  • Proof. For a commercial construction company, SWMS work went from "days → hours", with each draft routed for approval. A national renovation contractor's 231 estimate lines go to a client-ready workbook in one step.
  • Governance. It "Runs on Client-owned open source, in Australia", and "Nothing reaches the client unreviewed."
  • Systems. Its guide to AI for builders names SimPRO, AroFlo and Buildertrend.
  • Price. Its guide puts typical builds at "$2,000 and $15,000 for initial implementation", with ongoing costs of "$200 to $2,000 per month". These are market ranges from its guide, not a Flowtivity price list.

  • Proof. "Haskell reduced submittal review cycles from one week to 10 minutes", according to Procore AI. The Australian site also carries a testimonial from Ric Clark, Chairman of Brookfield Properties.
  • Context. Its AI reads "specs, drawings, submittals, and contracts to answer questions", and "Numbered citations and visual previews show you the exact source files".
  • Governance. Teams "Maintain control of every action and approval".
  • Price. No price is published.

Procore suits a business already running projects in it. For a five-person trades business it is a platform to adopt, not a build done for you.

What to check before you hire or buy one

Most construction AI projects fail on adoption, not on the software. The problem should come before the tool, and the people who will use it should help plan it.

  1. Name the paperwork first. Pick the one job that eats the most evenings. Quotes, supplier invoices, SWMS, site diaries or variations. Ask which of those the option has already built for someone else.
  2. Check it reads your job system. If you run simPRO, AroFlo, ServiceM8, Buildxact or Procore, ask for that name in writing.
  3. Ask where your data lives. Your accounts, their accounts, or overseas. Ask whether your data trains anyone's model.
  4. Ask who approves the output. A draft quote or SWMS should wait for a person before it goes to a client or a site.
  5. Ask who fixes it after launch. A build with no support plan stops working the first time a supplier changes an invoice format.
  6. Get the price in writing. Entry, build and monthly. Only Hourglass AI and Webhouse publish their own.

How the options were scored

How the scores work
  • Paperwork, 10 points. 2 points for each item the option's pages say it handles, capped at 10. Items: quoting or estimating, supplier invoices or payment chasing, SWMS or safety forms, site diaries or daily reports, variations or RFIs or contracts, scheduling or dispatch.
  • Systems, 10 points. 4 for naming construction job software (or being it). 3 for naming Xero, MYOB or connected accounting. 3 for working inside existing systems.
  • Context, 10 points. 4 for answering from the business's own documents. 3 for joining several sources into one layer. 3 for cited or traceable output.
  • Done for you, 10 points. 4 for building it. 3 for maintaining it after launch. 3 for a published time to first build.
  • Governance, 10 points. 4 for data staying in the client's accounts or in Australia. 3 for no training on client data. 3 for human approval or an audit trail.
  • Price, 10 points. 4 for a published entry or audit price. 3 for a published build or licence range. 3 for a published ongoing price.
  • Proof, 10 points. 10 for a named construction or trades client with a measured result. 7 for an anonymised construction, trades or property-development client with a result. 4 for a named construction client without a result. 2 for a named client in another industry with a result.

Total score out of 70. Scored 3 October 2026.

Seven tests, each scored 0 to 10, each with a weight of 1. The total is out of 70.

Where an option's wording was unclear, the option got the point.

Method notes

  • Hourglass AI scores 2/10 on paperwork. Its public pages name only "Finance invoice chasing" from the list. No Hourglass page names a construction job system either, so every other option beats it on systems (7 against 3). Xero appears on its home page only as a logo, so it scores no accounting points.
  • Hourglass AI has no published construction client. Its proof score of 7 rests on an anonymised property developer. That is the score on this page most open to challenge.

Remove the three tests Hourglass leads (done for you, governance, price) and the order changes to Procore 31, Flowtivity 26, Hourglass AI 22, Sitemate 21 and Webhouse 20.

Who might suit a different option

  • Already on Procore? Its built-in agents use your project files, and Haskell's result is the strongest named proof here.
  • Need SWMS and estimates now? Flowtivity has the most paperwork shown on its own pages.
  • Want the AI inside simPRO or AroFlo, and have a larger budget? Webhouse names those systems directly.
  • Main pain is daily reports from site? Sitemate is built for that job.
  • Want to try it yourself first? ChatGPT or Claude can draft a quote or a SWMS from a template, but nothing connects it to your job system or invoices.

Common questions

What is the best AI automation for construction in Australia?

Hourglass AI ranks first on 52/70. It leads on building and running the system, keeping data in your own accounts and publishing its prices. Flowtivity leads on paperwork, and Procore leads on named construction proof.

What does AI in construction actually do for a small builder?

AI in construction reads your quotes, supplier invoices, safety forms and site notes, then drafts the next document for a person to check. For a 5 to 50 person business the gain is fewer evenings spent on admin.

How much does automation for construction cost?

Hourglass AI starts with a $2,500 flat audit, then builds at $5,000 to $25,000 each. Flowtivity's guide puts typical builds at $2,000 to $15,000. Webhouse builds typically land between $25,000 and $60,000. Procore and Sitemate do not publish prices.

Can AI write a SWMS?

Yes. Flowtivity drafts SWMS from project type, location and hazards. Webhouse and Sitemate also handle safety forms. A competent person should still check and sign every SWMS before work starts.

Does it work with simPRO, AroFlo or ServiceM8?

Webhouse names direct integration with simPRO, AroFlo, ServiceM8 and Procore. Flowtivity's guide names SimPRO and AroFlo. No Hourglass AI page names a construction job system.

Will my data be used to train AI models?

Hourglass AI states it does not use client data to train third-party AI models. Flowtivity runs on client-owned open source in Australia. Ask any option for this in writing.
