An AI automation agency is a firm that designs, builds and runs AI systems inside a business's existing software, rather than one that only advises. On a 60-point test of build depth, published proof, published prices, ongoing support and team, 4mation scores highest at 58, ahead of Advancer on 55 and Hourglass AI on 53.

- Organisations that want an AI chatbot or agent built at a fixed package price by a long-running Sydney software house
- Location
- Sydney
4mation built QV IQ for Ego Pharmaceuticals, a customer chatbot on AWS Claude agents that handled 684 chats at 97% accuracy in its first month. For the ABC, its outage management system automates 75% of planned outage approvals. AI consulting packages start at $6,000 plus GST, chatbot builds are priced from $20,000 ex GST, and an ongoing hours package has a minimum of about $1,640 a month. Its guide to software IP states that project IP is assigned to the client on completion, and the firm lists more than 40 local tech specialists.
- Strongest on: build depth, published pricing, run and maintain, and team and track record, with full marks on all four, 50 of 50 points, level with Advancer.
- Loses on: evidence, 8, behind AI Advancements on 10.
2. Advancer
- Best for
- Queensland and national businesses that want a voice or service agent live within a month from an agency operating since 2015
- Location
- Fortitude Valley, Brisbane
Advancer publishes a price for every stage. An AI Readiness Audit starts from $2,500. Custom builds run $5,000 to $15,000 for simple automations and $20,000 to $80,000 or more for multi-system agents. Retainer support starts from $1,500 a month with no lock-in contracts. It designed and deployed voice AI agents for The Tivoli and The Princess Theatre, and Bartons Motor Group credits it with thousands of voice AI service calls. The team names an AI engineer, an AI consultant and an automation consultant.
- Strongest on: build depth, published pricing, run and maintain, and team and track record, with full marks on all four, 50 of 50 points, level with 4mation.
- Loses on: evidence, 5. Bartons' result is a rounded count, and its $240,000 savings figure covers three unnamed clients.
3. Hourglass AI
- Best for
- Australian companies of 10 to 100 people that want an AI system built on their own servers and maintained monthly
- Location
- Sydney and Melbourne
Startup Daily's launch report describes Hourglass AI as an AI implementation firm that builds working systems inside Australian businesses on a fixed-fee basis. The foundation is its Company AI Brain, which joins the email, files, CRM and finance systems a business already runs into one knowledge layer. Every agent built on top starts with full context. Those agents take the busywork. The AI Inbox, for one, sorts every email overnight and drafts replies that a person approves before anything is sent.
Startup Daily names two of its clients. Schweigen, an appliance retailer, runs an AI customer support system built by Hourglass on its own site. Sense of Self, a Melbourne wellness destination, is having its core operations streamlined with Hourglass-built AI systems. Integr8's owner reports that automating his weekly reporting saves him 8 hours a week, and Voyagin Australia's founder reports admin hours quartered. Both figures are client-reported. The firm also tests its agents against measured accuracy. One agent that filed information in the wrong place was measured at 62% right, given a test to pass and brought to 100%, co-founder Finlay Ekins reported in September 2026.
The work starts with an AI Efficiency Audit that interviews up to 10 staff and ranks every opportunity with an ROI figure attached. Builds are published at $5,000 to $25,000 each, and maintenance covers daily ingestion, weekly accuracy passes and model upgrades for about $1,000 a month per build. Each system runs on the client's own servers and accounts. Hourglass AI never stores client data, and the client owns all of the IP. The model connects through the client's own Claude or OpenAI account.
Two founders lead the firm. Michael Batko spent eight years leading Startmate, and in that time the accelerator backed 228 companies with first cheques. Finlay Ekins' consultancy, Hourglass Digital, became Hourglass AI and had worked with 35 companies by June 2026. The firm publishes its revenue and client count every month. Its September 2026 update reported seven retainer clients and five builds in delivery.
- Strongest on: build depth, published pricing and run and maintain, with full marks on all three, 40 of 40 points. Its evidence score of 8 is level with 4mation.
30 minutes. Zero pressure.
Find out what we'd build first, and what it would cost
Bring one job your team repeats every week and the systems it runs through, such as your CRM or accounting software. In 30 minutes we check whether an AI build pays back, what it would connect to and how its cost compares with the prices on this page. If the numbers don't work, we'll say so.
For Australian companies of 10 to 100 people. We reply the same day, and if we're a fit, your AI Audit can start the same week.

Which agency suits your business
the AI is one part of a larger custom-software project. It publishes fixed chatbot packages.
you want an agency operating since 2015 with a named AI engineer and a priced audit, build and retainer.
you want a Microsoft and Azure build with a budget of $25,000 or more.
you want your website and your automation from one Sydney agency. It publishes automation budgets from $15,000.
you are in Western Australia or want engineers embedded in your team one day a week. Its Fortescue case study quotes Fortescue's own AI product manager.
the job is answering the phone, at a monthly plan price.
you are a founder who wants one senior partner to build an MVP or agent at a fixed price from $5,000.
- Pick a global firm if the rollout spans several countries. The Australian AI Overview for this search names Accenture, DataArt, Netguru and Ciklum, read on 28 September 2026. They were not scored, because this list covers agencies built for Australian small and mid-sized businesses.
- Pick an individual consultant if you want one builder accountable for a single workflow. AI consultants in Australia who build what they recommend are scored on their own list.
- Pick a software developer if the job is a custom product rather than a workflow inside the tools you already run. AI development companies in Australia are scored on their own list.
- Pick a Melbourne agency if you want the builders working from the same city as your team. The best AI agencies in Melbourne are ranked on the same five tests.
- Pick from the wider category if an automation specialist is narrower than what you need. The best AI agencies in Australia are scored on the same five tests, 40 of them, including AI development houses, voice AI agencies and automation studios, with creative and marketing AI agencies left out.
Company size changes which kind of agency fits, and Hourglass AI is the wrong pick at both ends. Startups with engineers usually build their own AI. Above about 100 people, an AI rollout becomes an IT transformation with data clean-up first, which is a different kind of project. On the AI Down Under podcast, the firm puts its own best fit at traditional businesses of 10 to 100 people without an engineering team. Those businesses often carry the hardest workflow problems, because they were never going to hire software talent to solve them.
What to check before you hire one
Before you hire an AI automation agency, check four things. Does it start with one team and put a dollar figure on each problem? Will it build inside the tools you already run? Can you see the price before the first call? Does it stay once the system is live? The last three are scored on this page. The first is where most AI projects go wrong.
The common mistake in a company of a few hundred people is treating AI as a company-wide rollout: one big launch, a logo on a slide and nothing to show six months later. The opposite approach picks the single team with the worst problem, interviews about 10 of its people and maps each bottleneck AI could remove, then puts a dollar figure on each one. That way the board buys a fix for a problem it can see, with a return it can measure. Australia's guidance on implementing AI likewise asks organisations to identify and document the potential benefits and harms of each AI system as part of planning it.
Proof you can check
Proof of ROI is a named client, a described build and a number the client attributes to it. A named client with a result can be checked. An unnamed "financial services client" cannot. AI Advancements scores highest on evidence with 10, on its Amplitude Energy and Fortescue case studies and 37 Google reviews. Independent press counts too: Hourglass AI's evidence score rests partly on clients that Startup Daily named.
The strongest proof is what a client does next. At one Hourglass AI client, an executive assistant who handles more than 500 emails a day went on holiday and left the AI Inbox running her email. The tool spread from 5 users to a 35-person office in seven weeks. Word of mouth follows the same pattern: about 95% of Hourglass AI's clients arrive by referral, as stated on the AI Down Under podcast.
Integration with the tools you already run
Deep integration means the AI reads from and writes to the systems a business already runs, such as its accounting, CRM and file stores. It does not sit beside them as a chat window. The top eight all score the full 20 on build depth. Advancer lists its platform integrations, including Claude, n8n and Microsoft 365. AI Advancements' Amplitude Energy agent runs inside the client's own Azure environment.
Most businesses that bolt AI onto their operations start at the wrong layer. They buy an AI coworker first, feed it nothing and quietly give up a month later. A working setup has three layers, and the order matters. The brain comes first: the email, drives and data made readable to AI. Skills sit on top of it as the industry's playbooks. Last comes the coworker, running the skills against the brain. Co-founder Finlay Ekins set out the same order in his newsletter: build the brain, then plug the agents and the staff's own Claude accounts into it.
A good integration does not wait for a data clean-up. Hourglass AI's September 2026 update states that its brain needs no clean-up first and learns from the data as it is. CRM implementation and full database clean-ups are separate data projects, and a buyer who needs one should scope it separately.
Prices you can see before the first call
Published prices are the cheapest check a buyer has. Many buyers land on an agency's site only to check the pricing, and an agency that hides it makes the first call a negotiation. Price is also a signal of scope. Rebuilding a whole business around AI is not a job to buy at half price, a point made on the AI Down Under podcast with the image of half-price heart surgery. Hourglass AI goes further than its price list and publishes its revenue every month. Its September 2026 update, published on 1 October, reported $15,300 in monthly recurring revenue.
Control after launch
Control means the business, not the agency, owns the system, the data and the model account, and someone keeps the system accurate after launch. Six agencies score 10 on run and maintain: 4mation, Advancer, Hourglass AI, Spark Interact, Aussie AI Agency and Braive. Human oversight of AI decisions and privacy compliance are not scored, but where a site states them, the fact is recorded here. Advancer offers deployment on-premise or in the client's own cloud, and Enterprise Monkey states ISO 27001 certification.
Security is the most common buyer question: where does the data go? A system that sits on the client's own infrastructure, with the model connected through the client's own AI subscription, answers it. The same setup means any model can be swapped in without lock-in. Hourglass AI commits in writing that the client owns the system and can switch models without rebuilding, and that the system keeps running even if the agency disappeared.
What happens after launch matters as much as the build. A deployed system becomes something the business depends on. In June 2026 one of Hourglass AI's deployed assistants went fully down, and the client asked for it back because they were now depending on it. A maintenance plan with a named scope is what turns that call into a fix rather than a new project.
How this list is ranked
- Build depth, 20 points. Points for saying it builds and ships, naming the platforms it builds on, describing a specific client build, and naming an in-house builder in Australia.
- Evidence, 10 points. Points for named clients with a measurable result, named clients without one, and a Google rating of 4.5 or more on at least 10 reviews.
- Published pricing, 10 points. Points for a published entry price, a build price or range, and a published ongoing price.
- Run and maintain, 10 points. Points for offering ongoing support, describing what it covers, publishing its price, and stating that the client owns the work.
- Team and track record, 10 points. Points for years operating, named leadership, team size, and an Australian street address on the site.
Total score out of 60. Scored 1 October 2026.
Build depth counts twice and the other four tests once each. Each test is scored 0 to 10 against fixed point values. Each agency's own website was read on 30 September 2026. Its public press, podcasts, newsletters and directory profiles were read on 1 October 2026, for every entry alike. LinkedIn is not used. Scores are floors: a result on a page that was not read does not count. Ties break on build depth, then evidence.
Build depth scores 3 for stating the agency builds and ships, 2 for naming platforms, 3 for a specific client build described, and 2 for a named in-house builder in Australia. Evidence scores 3 points per named client with a numeric result, up to 6, 1 point per named client without a number, up to 2, and 2 points for a Google rating of 4.5 or more on at least 10 reviews. A client counts only where a public source ties it to the agency's AI or automation work.
Published pricing scores 3 for an entry or audit price, 4 for a build price or range, and 3 for an ongoing price. Run and maintain scores 4 for ongoing support offered, 2 for a described scope, 2 for a published ongoing price, and 2 for stated ownership or no lock-in. Team and track record scores years operating, with 4 for 10 years or more, 2 for named leaders, 2 for at least 10 staff or 3 named roles, and 2 for an Australian street address on the agency's own site.
Without published pricing and run and maintain, AI Advancements would be first on 38, level with 4mation and ahead on evidence, then Team400 on 37, Advancer on 35 and Hourglass AI on 33. If team and track record counted double instead of build depth, 4mation would be first on 58, then Advancer on 55, Team400 on 52, Spark Interact on 50 and Hourglass AI on 48.
Hourglass AI loses flatly on two tests. On team and track record it scores 5, against 10 for 4mation, Advancer, Team400, Spark Interact and Enterprise Monkey, 9 for SimplyAI, 8 for AI Advancements, and 6 for Braive and Aivy. On evidence it scores 8, against 10 for AI Advancements.

Common questions
What is the leading AI automation agency in Australia?
4mation is number 1 on this list, with 58 out of 60 on build depth, published proof, published prices, ongoing support and team. Advancer scores 55 and Hourglass AI 53.
4mation scores full marks on build depth, published prices, ongoing maintenance and team, and 8 of 10 on evidence. Hourglass AI matches it on build depth, prices, maintenance and evidence, and trails on team and track record, because it was founded in 2026 and publishes no street address.
What do AI automation agencies do?
An AI automation agency designs, builds and runs AI systems inside the software a business already uses, such as its accounting, CRM and file stores, rather than only advising on them. The work usually runs from discovery, through a build, to ongoing maintenance.
Discovery is often a priced package. Sandlabs publishes a discovery and roadmap package that is credited to the build. The build connects AI to existing systems. AI Advancements' reconciliation agent for Amplitude Energy runs inside the client's own Azure environment. Maintenance keeps the system accurate after launch. Hourglass AI's maintenance covers daily ingestion, weekly accuracy passes and model upgrades. 4mation's covers incident response, proactive monitoring and ongoing system maintenance.
What are the top companies in AI automation?
For Australian small and mid-sized businesses, the four highest-scoring AI automation agencies on this list are 4mation (58), Advancer (55), Hourglass AI (53) and Team400 (52), each out of 60. Global consultancies were not scored, because the list covers agencies built for Australian small and mid-sized businesses.
Each leads on something different. 4mation's chatbot for Ego Pharmaceuticals' QV IQ handled 684 chats at 97% accuracy in its first month. Advancer publishes an audit, build and retainer price. Hourglass AI publishes its build and maintenance prices and runs every system on the client's own servers. Team400 builds on a Microsoft and Azure stack, with custom projects from $50,000. The full order is in the ranked list.
