An AI agent is software that does work in your other apps, like updating a record or sending an email, instead of only chatting. On a 70-point test of real work, connections, data control, price, human review and Australian availability, Microsoft Copilot Studio scores highest at 67, ahead of Relevance AI on 64 and ChatGPT on 61.

Copilot Studio builds agents that live inside the Microsoft 365 apps a team already opens every day. Event triggers let an agent act on its own when something happens, such as a new file in SharePoint, and its computer use tool can operate websites and desktop apps on a Windows computer.

No other product on this list scores full marks on the Australian test. Microsoft lists Australia East and Australia Southeast as data locations, publishes prices in Australian dollars and has its Australia Regional Office in North Sydney. Agent building comes with Microsoft 365 Copilot at AU$44.90 a user a month, paid yearly, for internal agents.

OpenAI retired ChatGPT agent and replaced it with ChatGPT Work, which can start a task on a new Gmail message or a schedule. On Business and Enterprise, workspace agents are built from a plain-language prompt, and their write actions default to asking first. OpenAI states it does not train on Business or Enterprise data by default, and it names Australia as a country where eligible Enterprise customers can store content. OpenAI also opened its first Australian office, in Sydney, in December 2025.

  • Strongest on: real work, connections and data control, with full marks on all three. Its apps include Gmail, Outlook, SharePoint, HubSpot and QuickBooks.
  • Loses on: human review, 7. Compliance logs are for Enterprise and Edu, not Business.

Under the Salesforce Trust Layer, prompts and responses are never stored or used to train third-party models. Salesforce publishes Australian prices, with the small business Starter Suite at AU$35 a user a month, and has an office in Salesforce Tower, Sydney.

  • Strongest on: data control and human review, with full marks on both.
  • Loses on: real work, 16 of 20. No browser or computer use appears on the pages read. On the Australian test, its data region page does not name Australia.

  • Strongest on: real work, connections and human review, with full marks on all three.
  • Loses on: the Australian test, 0. No Australian hosting, pricing or office appears on the pages read. Human review scores full marks, but approval rules only apply in shared Slack threads, not in direct messages or web chat.

When another agent is the better pick

you want to build a team of agents and keep your data in Australia from the first day.

your team already uses it and the job starts in Gmail or on a schedule.

you want to try an agent on real work this week without paying.

your customer records already live in Salesforce.

your team works in Slack and wants one assistant everyone can ask.

you run on Google Workspace and want workflows across Gmail, Drive and Calendar.

you already automate with Zaps and want an agent to use the same apps.

  • Pick a coding agent if you are a developer. Coding agents such as Claude Code, Devin and Cursor were not scored, because this list is for businesses handing off operational work.

Where an off-the-shelf agent stops

The cheapest test of any agent is the work a team already repeats every week. Hourglass AI co-founder Finlay Ekins keeps a list of those jobs as a test centre and adopts a tool once it does a task 80% as well while saving time. For a lot of work, one of these eight passes that test.

They fall short on fit to one business. Hourglass AI runs much of its own day to day on an internal assistant called Glassy, and it is rebuilding Glassy fully custom because the off-the-shelf pieces underneath got too hard to bend to the job. That is the case for custom software: the tool learns how the business works, not the other way round. An off-the-shelf agent stops in three places.

Does it know how your company works?

Every agent here starts with what you connect to it: an inbox, a drive, a CRM. None of them starts knowing how your company prices a job, who signs off a refund, or how you answer an unhappy customer. You teach each one separately, and when you switch tools you teach it again.

A Company AI Brain solves that with one layer that holds a company's data, voice, decisions and processes, so every agent built on top starts with full context. That brain is now the core of what Hourglass AI sells, and Startup Daily describes the firm as one that builds working systems inside Australian businesses on a fixed fee.

Does it reach your own systems?

If your books are in Xero or MYOB, check the connector first. Six of the eight connect to Xero or QuickBooks on the pages read, and none names MYOB.

Then check whose account the agent runs on. The Australian Cyber Security Centre says strict least privilege is critical for agentic AI, because an agent's access sets the risk it can introduce. Hourglass AI is converging on a standard where you bring your own API key, so the agent runs on an account you already control. The cost and security benefit comes when it also runs on your own infrastructure. Everything Hourglass AI builds sits on your own servers and accounts, and you own all of the IP. The language model itself still runs with a third-party AI provider.

A tool built for one company's inbox can carry real volume: one Hourglass AI client went from sorting 600 emails a day by hand to running its email tool around the clock.

Who keeps it working?

Three of the eight have been renamed or restructured. OpenAI retired ChatGPT agent for ChatGPT Work, Zapier is moving Agents into a step inside its workflow editor, and Google renamed Agentspace to Gemini Enterprise. The real gains now come from the tools and code around the model, not from the model itself, so someone has to keep an agent working through every change.

Checking the work is most of that job. One Hourglass AI agent kept filing information in the wrong place, so it was measured at 62% right, given a test to pass and left to fix itself, and it now scores 100%. Australia's National AI Centre makes the same point, telling businesses to improve testing, monitoring and accountability as their AI use grows. Hourglass AI's maintenance covers daily ingestion, weekly accuracy passes and model upgrades as they ship. The firm's stated aim is clients who build their own AI tools rather than depending on it for every setup.

So try the tool first, and keep your money when it does the job. When it stops at one of these three places, that is the agent Hourglass AI builds.

How this list is ranked

How the scores work
  • Real work, 20 points. Points for taking actions in other apps, starting on its own when something happens, operating a browser or computer, and a no-code builder.
  • Connects to your tools, 10 points. Points for Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, a CRM, an accounting system such as Xero or QuickBooks, and an API or MCP.
  • Data control, 10 points. Points for a written no-training statement on a paid plan, a choice of data region, and SOC 2 Type II or ISO 27001.
  • Price for a small team, 10 points. Points for a published list price, a free plan that includes the agent, and a paid plan at USD 30 or AUD 45 a user a month or less.
  • Human review, 10 points. Points for an approval step before an action runs, a run or activity log below the Enterprise plan, and a public status page or uptime SLA.
  • Australia, 10 points. Points for data hosted in Australia, prices in AUD and an Australian office.

Total score out of 70. Scored 1 October 2026.

Real work counts twice and the other five tests once each. Each test is scored 0 to 10 from the product's own pages, docs, help centre and pricing page, read on 30 September 2026. On 1 October 2026 the read widened, for every product alike, to press coverage, vendor announcements and partner pages such as Xero's own connector page. Scores are floors: a feature on a page that was not read does not count. Ties break on real work, then data control.

Real work scores 3 for taking actions in other apps, 3 for starting on its own when something happens, such as a new email or a webhook, 2 for operating a browser or computer, and 2 for a no-code builder. Connections scores 2 each for Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, a CRM, an accounting system such as Xero or QuickBooks, and an API or MCP. Data control scores 4 for a written statement that customer data is not used to train models by default on at least one paid plan, 3 for a choice of region for stored data, and 3 for SOC 2 Type II or ISO 27001.

Price scores 4 for a published list price, 3 for a free plan that includes the agent, and 3 for a paid plan at USD 30 or AUD 45 a user a month or less, compared as each vendor publishes it, never converted. Human review scores 4 for an approval step before an action runs, 3 for a run or activity log below the Enterprise plan, and 3 for a public status page or uptime SLA. Australia scores 4 for data hosted in Australia, 3 for prices in AUD and 3 for an Australian office.

The buyer is an Australian business handing work to an agent. The Australian search results for best AI agent split three ways, between general assistants, coding agents and business platforms. Coding agents were not scored, and neither were consumer assistants with no business plan, such as Meta Muse and OpenClaw.

Without the Australian test, Microsoft Copilot Studio, Relevance AI and Manus would tie on 57. Copilot Studio and Relevance AI are also level on both tie-breaks, so they would share first, with Manus third on data control. With real work counted once, Microsoft Copilot Studio would still be first on 57, then Relevance AI on 54.

Common questions

Which is the best AI agent currently?

For an Australian business, Microsoft Copilot Studio scores highest of the eight AI agent platforms on this list, with 67 out of 70 on real work, connections, data control, price, human review and Australian availability. Relevance AI scores 64 and ChatGPT 61.

The best one depends on where your work already lives. Copilot Studio suits a business on Microsoft 365 and can keep data in Australian data centres. Relevance AI has a team in Sydney and lets you choose Australian hosting. ChatGPT connects to the most common apps and can start work on a new email.

Is ChatGPT the best AI agent?

ChatGPT is number 3 on this list, with 61 out of 70. It scores full marks on real work, connections and data control, with workspace agents that run on a schedule or on a new Gmail message and write actions that ask first by default.

It loses points on human review, because compliance logs are for Enterprise and Edu rather than Business. On the Australian test it publishes no prices in Australian dollars, although OpenAI opened a Sydney office in December 2025. Microsoft Copilot Studio and Relevance AI score higher for an Australian business.

Can I get an AI agent for free?

Yes, two of the eight ranked agents have a free plan that includes the agent, so you can start without paying. Manus gives 300 credits a day, and Zapier Agents allows 400 activities a month.

The others offer a trial or a starting credit instead. Microsoft Copilot Studio has a trial that cannot publish an agent, Gemini Enterprise has a 30-day trial, and Lindy gives US$50 of credits. Relevance AI has retired its free plan.

What is the best AI agent for a small business?

For a small business already on Microsoft 365, the best AI agent on this list is Microsoft Copilot Studio. It scores highest overall, at 67 out of 70, and its agents come with Microsoft 365 Copilot at AU$44.90 a user a month, paid yearly.

To start without paying, Manus has a free plan with 300 credits a day, and no other ranked product scores full marks on price. Zapier Agents also has a free plan, with 400 activities a month.
